Jesuit Saints Statues
Boston College – Chestnut Hill, MA
2020
St. Mary’s Chapel and Boston College commissioned us to create six statues for niches that were never filled after the chapel’s construction in 1917. The Chapel – a Jesuit church – desired to display portraits of Jesuit saints for its congregation and wider community. They chose St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Alberto Hurtado, St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Paul Miki, St. Joseph Pignatelli, and St. Francis Xavier. These men contributed in varying ways to the Jesuit cause and to humanity, such as performing missionary work, promoting social justice, leading the Catholic Reformation, and authoring works for the Society. Two of them were founders of the Society of Jesus itself. We researched the historical imagery of the saints as well as their biographies and legacies to design compositions that would express their work and faith.
